Responsible Travel

Responsible tourism can be regarded as a movement. It is more than a form of tourism as it represents an approach to engaging with tourism, be that as a tourist, a business, a local, a destination, a government body or any other tourism stakeholder. It emphasizes that all stakeholders are responsible for the kind of tourism they develop or engage in.

Responsible tourism has the following characteristics:

  • minimizes negative economic, environmental, and social impacts
  • generates greater economic benefits for the local people and enhances the well-being of host communities
  • improves working conditions and access to the industry
  • involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances
  • provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
  • engenders respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence.

Maldives: from enclave to responsible tourism.

Tourism industry in the Maldives has been so far almost exclusively restricted to resort islands. Resort islands are self-contained properties where all the elements of a holiday (accommodation, meals, drinks, sports, and entertainments) are offered within the resort borders. Guests rarely leave the resort and thus little money feeds into the local economy. Resorts in Maldives lead to enclave tourism because the local participation and interaction in these tourism products is very limited. Further, most of the resorts are owned or operated by foreign companies thus a great part of the generated incomes are siphoned out of the country. Local islands, away from resorts, were almost totally unaffected by contact with the outside world. For this reason the access to the inhabited islands were permitted by personal invitation only. However, on 22nd July 2008, the Maldivian Parliament considered the resolution on bringing an end to the government policy of banning tourist establishments in inhabited islands. About a month later, on 19th August 2008, the Maldivian Parliament passed the resolution authorizing the registration of guests house in any island of the archipelago.

Villa Stella

Since 2003, friends and travelers are visiting Villa Stella, a private villa on the island of Ribudhoo in Dhaalu Atoll. Villa Stella has been the first house where overseas guests were invited to spend few days on a inhabited island. Villa Stella has traced a new form of responsible tourism to the Maldives where tourists respectfully access to the most genuine Maldivian reality. On 10th March 2010, Villa Stella became an official guest house, duly registred at the Ministry of Tourism. For reservation and further information on a holiday at Villa Stella, please click here.
